Generation Mix Episode 27 - Third Day

This episode is a dive into the music of a Christian rock band by the name of Third Day.  But wait, don't skip it - they're really good!  Covering their entire 20+ year recording career, this compilation was one of the most enjoyable for Dad to listen back to.  Joel is non-committal to begin with but then gradually warms to the tracks with a few real highlights along the way.  He also get's embarrassed but you'll have to listen to the end to find out why - it's a Dad/Son thing!

Joel's revenge - after the last one was dark, you'd think this would lighten up a tad.  But no - I'm a bit worried about what he's listening to to be fair.

Generation Mix Episode 26 - Slade

Ah - Slade!  Not just for Christmas - and in this episode not for Christmas at all.  This is the longest episode we've yet put out.  This is probably because Neil considers Slade one of the most under-rated bands.  Slade hit the number one spot 6 times in the first half of the 70s yet they don't seem to be as celebrated as other 70s hitmakers.

These 20 tracks - all written by Holder and Lea are from across their 20+ year career, taking in major hits, minor hits, albums cuts and the occasional obscure b-side.

Joel has a revenge to enact and this takes the podcast into a fairly deep and somewhat darker direction.

Generation Mix Bonus Episode 5 (season 2) - Adele 30

Our first bonus episode of Season 2 sees us grasp the nettle of the zeitgeist and get current.  This is Joel's first listen (3rd for Neil) of the brand new Adele album, 30.

Joel, as you might know loves its three predecessors (check out the Back To Black bonus episode for his thoughts on 19) and was hotly anticipating this.  Join us for his first reactions.

As the first single, Adele asks us to "go easy on me".  Find out if we did.

Generation Mix Episode 25 - Bucks Fizz

This is an episode VERY close to Neil's heart.  Bucks Fizz was his favourite band from the age of 7 onwards.  Famously formed to win the 1981 Eurovision song contest with Making Your Mind Up.  It's time to find out what Joel thought of this particular CD.

Tracks are drawn from the 5 studio albums with a liberal smattering of the many singles released up to 1989, including a couple of their 3 number ones.

Next episode is a bonus - we are aiming to listen to the brand new Adele 30 album.

Generation Mix Episode 24 - Elvis Costello

In our latest podcast episode, we turn to the music of Declan MacManus, better known as Elvis Costello.  This is both with and without the Attractions, his phenomenal backing band from the late 70s through to the mid 90s (with a sizeable gap in between).  There are co-writes with an ex-Beatle, but the majority is all individually penned stuff from one of the UKs greatest lyricists.

Does Joel enjoy it?  Well the presence of a Joel's revenge towards the end might act as a clue.

Generation Mix Episode 23 - A-Ha

Episode 23 and we enjoy Norway's greatest export, the threepiece pop band A-Ha.

We'll be Hunting High and Low through their back catalogue from the debut single, Take On Me through to 2015's Cast In Steel album.  On the way, Neil finds out something that excites him a fair bit, the TV show Masked Singer gets mentioned and there is just a smidgen of Bond, James Bond.

This episode doesn't have a Joel's Revenge.  You'll have to listen to find out why.

Also, apologies for the near 2 week delay in release.  Joel tested positive for Covid19 and was keeping well away from the rest of the family in his room.  Normal service and scheduling will be resumed next time.  But who is next - listen right to the end for the usual clue.

Generation Mix Episode 22 -Muse

Episode 22 sees us dive into the mad, mad Invincible world of Muse. This threepiece band from the Devon town of Teignmouth made it really big in the noughties - and big is the right word.  Huge riffs, driving bass and drums and some outlandish vocals - one might even suggest Hysteria.

This was a fun episode to record and the 17 tracks cut across all their albums up to and including Drones from 2015.

There is a Joel's revenge to contend with - is it another youtuber?  You know it is.

Generation Mix Episode 21 - Stevie Wonder

Season 2.  At Last - it's here.  We know you've been waiting for this a while.  We are listening to a selection of Motown's greatest ever artist - Stevie Wonder.  A man who has won stackloads of Grammy awards for a string of critically acclaimed albums in the 70s whilst maintaining a significant singles chart presence - no mean feat for anyone, especially someone who has been blind all their life.

Joel gives his assessment of the tracks as ever then inflicts a revenge on Dad.

Generation Mix Special - Season 1 Retrospective

At the end of Book 1 of the CDs I made a sort of Greatest Hits, featuring one track from each of the 20 CDs.  Now that we've reviewed them all, we are revisiting this compilation and asking - is this still your favourite, and if not, what is.

 

In the spirit of this episode, Neil also reveals his favourite Joel's Revenge.

Generation Mix Episode 20 - Kirsty MacColl

It's the end of season 1!  Episode twenty features the music of Kirsty MacColl.  A great singer and songwriter who struggled to really make the impact that her prodigious talents truly deserved.  One of the few famous people that Neil has actually met.  

Joel is relatively non-committal throughout but this is a great trawl through her 20 year career, tragically (and criminally) cut short in the waters off the coast of Mexico.

 

Joel rounds out the series with a revenge as ever.

We will be plugging the gap between now and the start of season 2 with a bonus episode and a few season retrospectives, and maybe a few thoughts about the music that came out in 2020.
